A hat block is the solid form used to establish the size, head shape, height, and overall profile of a hat crown. The felt or straw is shaped over the block before the final crease and finishing work begin.

A practical starting guide
How to Choose Your Block
Start with the finished hat size
Select the intended wearable size. The model includes the necessary allowance for the sweatband.
Match the head shape
Choose Round, Oval, or Long Oval based on the wearer’s front-to-back proportion.
Choose the crown profile
Use Model 51 for more taper or Model 52 for a fuller, straighter open crown.
Select the height
Leave enough material and crown height for the crease and finished style you plan to create.

About the Blocks
Are these finished hat shapes?
The models are open-crown hat blocks. They establish the crown foundation; the hat maker creates the final crease and styling afterward.
Why can the block measure larger than the selected size?
The selected size refers to the intended finished wearable size. The block includes an allowance so the finished hat can accommodate the sweatband.
What equipment do I need for the STL?
You need a slicer and a 3D printer with sufficient build volume, or access to a printing service. Herald Hats can also quote physical printing and shipping separately.
Are hat plates available too?
Yes. Hat plates are available with Craftsman and Master Builder plans and can be selected by supported size and head shape.
